Girls school in Roorkee

Roorkee is another feather in the cap of Uttarakhand. Roorkee is majorly known for its engineering college, today known as the Indian Institute of Technology. This engineering campus is the first campus to teach engineering in Asia and was formerly known as Thompson College of Civil Engineering. The city also has been the headquarters of the Bengal Engineer Group since 1853. The other thing which makes Roorkee more special is that there exist India's oldest military establishments. Despite being a small city from a very small state, Roorkee has achieved a lot in the field of education, national security, development, and historical victory.

  • Asia's first Engineering college was built in the land of Roorkee.
  • Roorkee is a part of the Shivalik Ranges of The Great Himalayas but is a flat terrain.
  • The Ganga Canal, which is one of the oldest examples of architecture flows from the middle of the city. Even today the canal is known for its brilliant architecture and is a masterpiece.
  • As a part of the Ganga Canal, India's first Aqueduct was also built over the Solani River, near Roorkee which is also the First irrigation-related construction of North India.
  • India's first steam engine ran in Roorkee. It was exactly two years before when the first passenger train was started in Bombay (currently Mumbai). The engine was shipped from England to India.

There is about 3.66 lakh of the total population in Roorkee of which 1.8 lakh people are males and about 1.5 lakh people are females. The average literacy rate of the city is about 90% in total of which about 93% of the male population is literate while approximately 85% of the female population is literate. The sex ratio, as well as the literacy ratio of the place, is good. This might be the result of the healthy development of the city from a very early age. It has been a witness of many firsts of not just India but of Asia as well. Roorkee was amongst the favorite places of the British era. Most of the places were significantly developed in Uttarakhand by Britishers as it was a good holiday destination for them.
