Members of the famed English heavy metal band visited Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram (now known as the Beatles Ashram) in February 1968 to practise mindfulness meditation. During their time at the Maharishi's ashram, the band wrote roughly 48 songs, several of which appear on the White Album (and a few from Abbey Road). After his visit, John Lennon wrote a song called "The Happy Rishikesh Song." Other worldwide performers that came to consider and meditate included Mike Love of the Beach Boys, Paul Horn, Donovan, and Gyp Mills. Rishikesh is also known for its small cafes, which serve both regional and international cuisines and are frequently visited by tourists. Rishikesh has been famous in recent years for its lively Holi celebrations, which are largely organised by luxury hotels and resorts.

Uttarakhand has a literacy rate of 79.63 percent, making it India's 17th most literate state. The state's literacy rate differs between males and females. According to the 2011 census, male and female literacy rates are 80.33 percent and 70.70 percent, respectively. When comparing the literacy rates of the state's several districts, Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, and Pauri Garhwal come out on top. The state is bound under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009,' which mandates free education for children aged 6 to 14. There are 14 public and 15 private universities in the state. The state, which has over 500 colleges, provides higher education in a wide range of fields. According to the NIRF 2020 Ranking, IIT Roorkee has been among the top 100 universities in the world.
