ABOUT ROORKEE

Roorkee is a city in Uttaranchal, located in the Haridwar district. It lies 30 kilometres from Haridwar, on the National Highway-58, on the banks of the Ganga. The name Roorkee comes from Ruri, the wife of a Rajput tribal king. The Ganges Canal resulted in another first for Roorkee: India's first steam engine, Jenny Lind (specially transported from England and moved on tracks in India), travelled between Roorkee and Piran Kaliyar on December 22, 1851, two years before the first passenger train ran between Bombay and Thane in 1853.

The railway line, which is operated by the Bengal Sappers, was established to transport earth for the construction of the Upper Ganges Canal aqueduct from Piran Kaliyar, which is 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) from the city.
