Pune, also known as Poona, is a city in Maharashtra, India, located at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers. Pune, known as the "Queen of the Deccan," is the Maratha people's cultural capital. In the 17th century, the city rose to prominence as the capital of the Bhonsle Marathas. It was briefly taken by the Mughals, but from 1714 until its fall to the British in 1817, it functioned as the official Maratha capital once more. It was the Bombay Presidency's seasonal capital, and it is today a popular tourist destination with cool weather, historic and religious sites, museums, parks, hotels, and cultural attractions. Pune has established itself as an educational hotspot, earning the moniker "The Oxford of the East." Information technology (IT), engineering, and automotive companies have sprouted in Pune in recent years, making it a new start-up hotspot. Classical music, spirituality, drama, sports, and literature are all popular activities in the city. Pune was named India's most livable city in 2018 by the Indian Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry's Ease of Living Index.
