The Madras Christian College was built before independence, but it continues to be one the best colleges in our country.

The private schools teach only in English, but the public schools are either English medium or Tamil medium. The schools follow the state board's curriculum, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), or the National Institute of Open Learning. In Chennai, a child must attend three years of kindergarten education, ten years of primary and secondary schooling, and two years of higher secondary school.
