Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) is a curriculum based on the 10-year-old SSC curriculum. The ICSE board was started in 1973 and is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi.
The ICSE curriculum has a strong focus on Mathematics, Science and English. It also includes a large number of social science subjects. The language of instruction is English. The main aim of ICSE is to prepare students for the ISC examinations (class 11), which are held at the end of class 10.
The ICSE syllabus is divided into six units, each unit consisting of four blocks (A B C D). Each block comprises 8 lessons with one or more assessments per lesson. Each unit ends with an examination lasting 3 hours and 15 minutes and consisting mostly of objective-type questions based on multiple choice answers.
